I have been trying for months, if not years, to unsubscribe from Staples' emails without success. Today I am documenting the process.

I've been through this process many times. We'll see if this time it finally takes effect.

How to Edit file without checking it out from TFS

Try this option:
Tools -> Options -> Source Control -> Environment, select Allow checked-in items to be edited.
